What’s goin on everyone!? Today, I had a very intriguing conversation with hip hop artist, AWKWORD, coming to us from Connecticut, now living in New York City. When you listen to AWKWORD, his sound is absorbing, and his perceptive expression of life is so unique. He definitely has knowledge to share, and I admire that he uses his talent to give back to the people. We talked in length about a variety of topics, including: the art of rap, and its ability to influence political and social issues. AWKWORD breaks down his creativity, life experiences, and his views on the evolution of hip hop, as well as his favorite artists, and upcoming projects. There is definitely a lot to ponder during and after this interview. At the end of the day, we can appreciate that we are all connected, and can learn from each other. This song is a recent drop by up-and-comer Curtessy, with AWKWORD holding down the tail end of the track. ‘Memory Lane’ is a solid listen; a fundamentally sound song laced with throwback hip-hop vibes. I’m beginning to expect the consistent quality that is associated with any music AWKWORD co-signs. Curtessy leads off with the realness; he spins stories of his upbringing. Tales of a youth struggling painted with a optimistic brush, Curtessy shows that there’s more than negativity that come from rough younger days.

AWKWORD stands as an inspiration in the rap game. He’s more than just a spitter, although he’s head and shoulders above most in that regard, he’s a philanthropist and visionary; a pioneer in his own right. His forthcoming project is a DJ Booth hosted, 100% for-charity, album that’s slated to change the game up. It’s rare to find an artist who actually embraces empathy, one who actually cares enough to work towards a change. Even outside of hip-hop, outside of music entirely, it’s hard to find individuals willing to dedicate themselves to the betterment of others. Hat’s off to AWKWORD.

Most of the time we get joints from AWKWORD that are of a political nature so it is refreshing to get something where the homie is just spittin’ BARS! Even though I was always surrounded by drugs and alcoholism growing up, I was never in danger of using myself. Even when I have enjoyed music that glorified drug use, I always interpreted drug use as being more trouble than it was worth, and indulged my drug rap habit on a metaphorical level. Very few times did people try to get me to try drugs, and when they did, they found me to be immune to peer pressure. I was always very comfortable being the sober comics nerd in the party.

On his latest effort, it is clear Tranz has made a great decision, because as you will hear AWKWORD andTenacity have a bevy of impressive lyrics to display atop his uber-smooth beat. Tenacity kicks off the track with a filling 16, covering topics from body image to his history as a battle rapper. Leave enough room for AWKWORD, though, whose deep-voiced, powerful delivery anchors the cut, powering through to the end of this very well-rounded, complete jam. The honesty on his verse stands out and sets the stage for Awkword. We’ve come to expect the smooth delivery and second-take wordplay from this cat, and ‘Rap Journals’ doesn’t disappoint. This track is coming off the producer Tranzformer’s “Diamond & Gems” project. If this joint is any indication of the quality of that project, then you need to cop it. Awkword continues his pattern of quality work that sets himself above the rhyming masses. Keep up the good work homie.

HipHopLifeAndTimes:

I’m always, always going to be a big supporter of CT local (now NY), Awkword. Even though it seems like the term ‘keeping it real’ has been overused to the point of always making it completely invalid, there are still people out there (mainly within the underground scene might I add) that actually keeping meaning to that phrase, and Awkword’s one of those people. He’s a realistic and an optimist, and those things are always extremely prevelent in any material he puts out. He also gives 100% of his profits from his project World View to charities. Now THAT’s keeping it real.

Along with being a real dude, a fantatastic wordsmith he’s also a rapper that only seems to feature, or be featured with with equally solid artists. Tenacity is one of those rappers, and Tranzformer is that producer. ‘Rap Journals’ had me nodding my head like a chicken (yeah that makes sense). Tenacity has a whole heap of style, and stylistic-wise he wouldn’t be out of place paired up with the Doomtree crew. Tranzformer is a smooth producer, and makes good work of a simple beat but polishes it nicely with some cheeky samples and an interest chorus change.

If you’re fan of Doomtree, Atmosphere and Fashawn then you should check this track and the 3 dudes out. Don’t be silly now.

I was kind of surprised to find something in my inbox from an artist that I had previously heard about. About a year ago (if I remember correctly), I used to bump “Bars & Hooks” by AWKWORD featuring the likes of Sean Price, The Kid Daytona, and The Incomparable Shakespeare. I like this track. It feels as though Awkword said to his counterparts, “Define your version of ‘before,’” and each delivered their own interpretation. Awkword opens with a series of current events from the past decade or so, along with a few hints at his own personal hurdles. MarQ Spekt follows with a different approach, detailing more abstract and cerebral concepts surrounding the meaning of “before.” Then T.Shirt chimes in with his life before the music, who he was, what he did, and how he did it. Finally, Kel Spencer takes a historical approach, highlighting the before way before there even was a before. Get the message? Good. Now listen to the song. Awkword’s career is going straight up, so check him and his brethren out now so you can say you knew them all “before before.”
